Meet Gerald.
Every example of our Artisanal Training Data passes through one pair of human hands. They are Gerald’s. Gerald is our sole human data labeller, our longest-serving employee and, according to an audit we commissioned from a model he trained, “the backbone of artificial intelligence”.
“A label is just a promise you make to the future.”Gerald, while labelling a dog as a cat
The Gerald years.
- 2019Labels his first cat.
It is a cat. He is right. A legend begins.
- 2020Labels his first dog.
Labels it "cat". Stands by it. Refuses to discuss it further.
- 2021Labels the same cat again, more confidently.
Inter-annotator agreement with his 2019 self: 100%. Confidence: up 40%.
- 2022Achieves perfect inter-annotator agreement.
The only other annotator leaves to "pursue other datasets". Agreement has been 100% ever since.
- 2023Asked to label toxicity.
Labels every email from his manager. Is promoted to Senior Labeller, by a model he trained.
- 2024Solves a CAPTCHA.
Selects every square containing a traffic light, plus one that merely felt like a traffic light. The internet quietly accepts it.
- 2025Visits the S3 bucket.
Discovers the cool, dark bucket where his work is aged. Now spends weekends there. Says it is "peaceful".
- 2026Named Employee of the Epoch.
Accepts the award with a short speech. Labels the award "cat".
